Mexicano

Courts seeded by leaderboard rank.

By Yves Richel ·

True Mexicano. Round 1 is random. From round 2 onwards, courts are seeded by the overall leaderboard: the top 4 players go on Court 1, the next 4 on Court 2, and so on. Scoring is Americano-style — every game point counts toward your individual total. Highest total wins.

How does the Mexicano format work?

01

Random first round

Round 1 pairings are random to seed the leaderboard.

02

Courts seeded by rank

After each round the leaderboard is recomputed. The top 4 land on Court 1, next 4 on Court 2, and so on. You always play against players at your current level.

03

Fresh pairings inside each court

Within the 4-player pool on each court, team pairings are chosen so each player teams up with the partner they've met the fewest times. Every round stays varied.

04

Individual ranking

Points are summed per player across all rounds. The player with the highest total wins.

What are the rules of the Mexicano format?

  • First round random, then courts seeded by current leaderboard.
  • Top 4 on Court 1, next 4 on Court 2, etc.
  • Points are individual, not per team.
  • Pool pairings minimise repeats with the same partner.
  • Highest total wins.

When is the Mexicano format the right choice?

Ideal for mixed groups where you want every round to be competitive. Stronger players play stronger players, but everyone earns points toward the same scoreboard. Works great with 8–16 players.

Best for: 8–16 players
