In padel one simple rule applies: whoever has the net has the advantage. At the net you can volley, cut down the angle and build pressure. The goal of every pair is to get to the net together and stay there.

Where exactly you stand

The ideal position is about 2 to 3 metres back from the net, roughly in the middle of your side of the court. From there you reach low balls and can still get to Lobs.

The area between this position and the service line is dangerous: balls land right at your feet there, and you stand too far forward for Lobs.

Staying at the net

Your opponents will try to drive you off the net with Lobs. With the Bandeja and the Víbora you hold your position instead of being pushed to the back.

From the net, do not go for quick winners. Play patiently into the middle and to the feet until an easy ball comes.

Common mistakes

  • Standing too close to the net: every Lob goes over you.
  • Staying in the zone in front of the service line.
  • Running all the way back right after a Lob instead of playing a Bandeja.

Drill: Hold the net

  1. One pair stands at the net, the other at the back.
  2. The back pair plays Lobs and low balls; the net pair tries to stay forward with the Volley and the Bandeja.
  3. If the net pair has to go back, you swap.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the net so important?

Because from there you take the ball early, can play steeper angles and your opponent has less time.

Do both partners stand equally far forward?

Basically yes. You move together so no gap opens up.
